Whats upper readers!? Today's Sketch Of The Day is another favorite from my recent House of SchauminChanel Fall 2010 collection. This ultra sleek look includes a Chiffon cowl, and a sheer side to back seam to add a sexy revealing touch. The denim is dyed and has multi-panels along the knees for a funky knee pad effect. The soft leather jacket is biased cut in the front for a slight ruffle effect, and is also adorned with grommets of all sizes and shapes. I hand sketched the illustration, and rendered the color in Adobe Photoshop. As always, your comments are both appreciated and encouraged.

How Low Can You Go!Are Cheap Clients Really Worth It?

Imagine your freelance business is booming! Your have potential clients pouring in left and right, as well as big projects to complete. As a freelancer, your on cloud nine until suddenly you hit a drought season. Now you have to push more aggressively to grab a freelance project. You ante up the marketing efforts, build your brand more, and suddenly you get a prospect or two! Unfortunately for you, one of your prospects are crabbing at the pricing & negotiation phase, and your faced with a dilemma: Lower your price or Lose your prospect. In my opinion, this is a lose/lose situation on the freelancer's end.

I previously did a post on pricing, and how it is always important to factor your costs and the current market in your prices. When you let a customer talk you too low in price you are seriously doing yourself and other respectable freelancers in your field a serious disservice. I always suggest to stay clear of the penny-pincher clients. There are four main factors that are a dead give away to the penny-pincher:

1. Prospect wants projects completed before they even made first contact with you, and signed the appropriate documents (if necessary).

2. Prospect professes to have worked with others in your field who charge significantly less.

3. Client fails to pay for the completed work on time. Payment arrangements always an issue.

4. Client is rude, impersonal, demanding, disrespectful, selfish, and overall just cheap!

If your prospect portrays any of these traits, don't even bother to waste your time. I recently had a client, whom of which, I completed a logo, and a flyer for his business. We have known each other for years, so I was not as stringent as I was with my regular business practices, and that was my biggest mistake. He griped about all of my prices, which I gave him price breaks on account of our friendship, and to make things worse, he was extremely disrespectful as far as the value of my work is concerned. He seen my work as something for fun, simple, and more of a leisurely task. This lack of respect for what I did as a graphic designer made him argue about price even more.

To make a long story short, I turned down further projects with this client because he was simply not worth it. As a designer, artist, or whatever trade your involved with, you must always remember the value you add to any project for any client. Is is priceless or worth pennies? How low can you go? I say low enough to seem like your somewhat flexible with them, but high enough to satisfy your value your time as any professional would. What are your thoughts on this topic? Hello my lovely readers both new and loyal! Today's Sketch of the day is a look from my Fall 2010 collection for House of SchauminChanel. This was actually one of my favorite looks. I thought it would be funky to implement different shades of this floral print, and a strip of studs at the hip to add a bit of rocker chic to the mix. It is layered with ruffle, and a hexagonal shaped fish knit for a nice pop of skin. She has a lovely wool dual tone swing coat that would compliment any piece in your closet. The gate represents my idea of the gates to the estate, and the estate is my mind. The overall meaning of House of SchauminChanel is that you enter my house, which in turn, is a different world in itself. Hello there good my friends! I know it has been quite a while since I have posted something in My Design Diary Secrets. During the past few months, I have done a lot of soul searching, and finding ways to better myself both professionally & personally. I am so proud to present to you all my Fall 2010 Collection Portfolio. The picture above represents my inspiration, which is basically the mystery behind what makes Parisian women so sexy. This collection in a whole is reminiscent of the hit series 'Sex in The City', only the french version. Ready....Set...... PRIORITIZE! Prioritizing with the 80/20 Theory

Hello all! I am sorry for my brief hiatus, but I was in the midst of a renovation. My workspace is immaculate, and about 90% complete. I will most likely post some pics of my new domain soon. I was inspired to write this post, because as I was setting up my workspace, and planning my week I realized how important it is to prioritize tasks.

I have my Fall 2010 collection to finally complete, sew, and place on my official website, which is under construction as well. I need to conceptualize my Spring 2011 as well as client work. I usually start a to-do list and it works for a few days to weeks, but I slowly begin to 'freestyle' my time management, which is not always the best thing to do. I always felt prioritizing was a daunting task to say the least, but this time I decided to try a different strategy.

Did you know that for every minute you invest in planning, you save ten minutes in execution?

In this post I will like to give some helpful tips on prioritizing your tasks with the 80/20 theory. The basic principle of the 80/20 rule is only few are vital, and many are trivial. In other words, only 20% of the things you spend time on doing produces 80% of the results you want to achieve.

The goal of the 80/20 rule is to maximize your productivity identify key activities that will produce the most desired results. You want to complete these vital tasks above all else, and increase the time you spend on them. Implementing this rule into your daily routine is not that difficult at all.

Step One:

Start an assessment to begin the process.

a. Observe how you currently use your time.

b. Assess your personal productivity trends.

c. Take a close look at the interruptions you face on a regular basis.

Step Two:

Identifying the top tasks that supports your goals

a. Stick with tasks only aligned with major goals.

b. Switch up your priorities according to the amount of urgency each one carries.

Ask yourself about these key tasks:

1. How much time do you devote to those activities? 20%? Less or more?

2. What are you doing with the remainder of your time?

3. How much return are you getting for the investment of the remainder time?

Step Three:

Personalize and prioritizing daily objectives

a. Start a Master Must Do List- Everything that needs to be done today in detail

b. Determine the “A” list- Focus on consequences if not done today.

c. Categorize the rest of your tasks-For example “B” level tasks may have a negative effect, “C” level tasks = no penalty, if not completed today. “D” tasks=delegate to see if really needed. “E” tasks=eliminated

d. Rank the tasks within each category- Rank items per letter, A-1, A-2, A-3 etc. One represents the highest priority, and the numbers go on from there.

Today's sketch of the day was from a previous client project. This look includes a lovely pleated silk tank with silk organza trim on the front and back just above the bust line with a rosette detail. The shorts are soft cotton twill, with a slight drape at the pockets. This look is perfect for a casual event, or that special first date. #1. Mahryska's Daily Dose

The author Mariyah is a freelance photographer based in Dubai. Like me, she has an addiction with anything fashion! She has a beautiful collection of fashion editorial eye candy you can feast your eyes on for days! Take my word, if your running low on fashion inspiration, this is the site for you!

#2. Designer's Nexus

This site is full of great sources for all fashion designers on every level! They offer a variety of FREE resources such as: Fashion Croquis, Fashion Sketches, CADs, and Fashion flats. They also offer helpful e-books on fashion design using Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator. I also found great articles on tips for careers in the fashion industry, and much more! I definitely feel this site is worth bookmarking for future reference.3

#3. The Fashion File

Bridget, the author is a fashion design student at SCAD-Savannah, and creates very unique illustrations. Her site has plenty of beautiful work(s) for you to gaze upon. I definitely feel this young lady is on her way, and you can witness her talent blossom slowly by visiting her lovely blog.

#4. Fashion Incubator

Kathleen Fasanella is the author of this very informative blog, and has over 27 years of experience in the apparel industry as a Professional Patternmaker. She is also the author of The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Sewn Product Manufacturing, which according to most internet reviews is a definite must have for people getting into the apparel business as far as product development is concerned. I have not read the book myself, however it is definitely on my book wish list! She has a plethora of informative articles, tutorials, and a private as well as public forum. I definitely feel this site is well worth the visit.

#5. Eye Make-Up Looks

Even though this is not a site dedicated to design, I feel make-up is part of the overall inspiration for fashion. I am also a make-up addict, and this site is a great fix for this addiction! You can find celebrity-inspired make-up looks, and tips for application. This blog is one of my daily indulgences, and if you like the world of beauty as much as you do fashion, I am confident you will enjoy this site too.

As a freelance professional, it is essential to be respected by your clients. A lot of freelancers however, tend to lose respect from their clients by detrimental mistakes such as: Inconsistent effort, Poor Communication, compromising their value with too low prices, and lack of professionalism. In this diary entry, I will discuss with you my top four essential tips that are sure to help you earn and keep respect from both current and prospective clients.

My Four Easy Steps To Gaining More Respect As A Freelance Professional

1. Never Sell Yourself Short!

Whether you are applying for a gig with a corporate client, or a small company, always remember to mention all of your achievements. Be proud of what you achieved no matter what, but try not to come off as haughty or snobbish to potential clients.

2. Always Charge What Your Worth

It is so easy to be tempted to scale down your prices just to gain a client, but trust me when I say it isn't worth the hassle. I have been guilty of doing this in the past, and I was not at all happy with the outcome. Remember to be successful you must know your worth, name your price, and stick to it!

3. Always Produce Your Best Work

In the situation I covered int he section above, I felt a bit resentful about the work I would have to do, and how little I would be compensated for it. I felt unappreciated, especially knowing the type of work I am capable of producing. I was a bit tempted in lowering the quality of my work to match the low pay, but I resisted simply because my reputation is on the line. Always produce as if this assignment is your last; because word of mouth can sometimes spread quicker than your marketing efforts, and negative information always tends to stick on the longest as well.

4. Always Remain Professional

As freelancers, we have the freedom to work the way we want, how we want, and most times where we want. This is a great perk, but it can also slowly condition some freelancers to become far too comfortable than need be. When meeting with clients, always dress professional, or at least business casual. Use appropriate language, always remain prompt for both meetings, and document everything. This shows the client you mean business, and that you also value their business.

Spice Up Your Design With A Print! How To Create & Add A Print /Texture To Your Fashion Croquis

In this tutorial I will show you how to spice up any fashion design with a fun and funky print. For this tutorial you need a sketch or any desired image, desired print (either scanned fabric, or digital fabric print), and Adobe Photoshop. This tutorial is fairly simple, and is a great method to learn when applying finishing touches on your fashion sketches/illustrations.

Step One

Open up your desired sketch in Photoshop, and color everything else that will not have the print on it. This is optional, but I find it helpful as well as time saving. I will not cover how to color your fashion croquis in this tutorial, but if you would like to learn how click the following link http://bit.ly/6GuyKQ .

Step Two

This step can be done in several ways, but I decided to select the garment using the Polygonal Lasso tool. This tool enables you to select the garment piece only by clicking along the lines of the dress all around until you snap back to the beginning point. Of course an easier way, but sometimes not as precise way to this is to use the Magic Wand tool.

Step Three

Create a new file 5 by 5 inches, with a resolution of 72. Paste or drag in your scanned texture within this file.

Step Four

I chose an over-sized Zebra print, and decided to add a bit of color to it. To achieve this, you go to Layer > New Layer, and change the blending mode from normal to multiply. Then click Edit >Fill with your desired color.

Step Five

After you got the desired color effect, go to Layer > Flatten Layers. Next, you will go to Edit > Define Pattern. A dialog box will open, like the picture above. Type in the name of your desired print and click OK. Your print is now ready to be used!

Step Six

Next click Edit > Fill > Pattern. Then find your pattern then click OK.

Step Seven

The print may or may not come out at your desired proportion. If this is the case go back to your textured print file and go to Image > Image Size, and change the resolution number and repeat the steps above again until you have the desired look. What is Personal Branding?

Personal branding describes the process by which individuals and entrepreneurs differentiate themselves from the crowd by identifying, and articulating their unique value proposition. They then leverage their value proposition with consistent messages and images to achieve a specific goal.

Why is it so important?

In this very competitive world, and especially the world of fashion, you have to leave a lasting impression, or otherwise get lost in the sea of other designers trying to break through. Good Personal Branding habits not only enhances your overall reputation, but can make you more of a desirable candidate for design jobs and/or new clients. There is a plethora of information out there on branding, and I know it can be quite overwhelming to look up, but I feel it is a necessary evil. When your in the professional area, it is no longer about you, its your brand that sells the most. In this diary entry, I will cover my basic 5 essential tips of branding to get you started!

1. Research, Research, Research!

Do your homework! Ask yourself what is your business really about. Try to develop a mission/vision statement for Brand YOU. A vision statement is often times described as a picture of your company in the future, but it is also your inspiration and framework for all of your strategic planning.

2. Target Market

Determine who you are trying to sell your services to, and focus your branding efforts primarily towards that targeted group. Come up with a game plan as to how you would approach them, and what impressions you would like to leave with your targeted group.

3. Keep-It-Simple-Stupid!

Keep your branding message fairly simple, by having a simple message you want to convey to your targeted group. By keeping your mission statement simple, you enable your targeted audience to not only grasp that message, but remember it.

4. Keep it Consistent!

Keep everything you do consistent, from your brand message to your general service options. By doing so, you will prevent future confusion down the line as far as what your brand represents, and what you are trying to achieve. I suggest finding your specialty/niche and keep most of your future expansion within that category. This makes you seem more of a specialist vs. a brand opportunist.

5. Presence

In order to brand your freelance services, you need to have presence in the marketplace. Try to engage in social media marketing (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, etc.). When engaging in social media marketing, please remember to always remain professional, otherwise you can be a hindrance to your brand by misrepresenting it in an unprofessional way. A website is also a great investment, and also solidifies as well as legitimizes your business in the eyes of consumers.

Will Design For Free! Spec Work, Is It Really Worth The Hassle?

Imagine while checking your email, and surfing the net, you come across a job post you couldn't resist. You excel at all of the required qualifications, and know for sure that you are the ideal candidate for this freelance position. As you begin to prepare your email, and attach your recently revised resume you notice a small part of the post that reads: "...Just come up with ideas, concepts, and put something together, then we will decide whether to hire you."

It doesn't matter whether you are designing Women's wear, building websites, or a freelance writer, you will more than likely get asked to do some spec work at some point in your freelance career. Spec work is basically taking on the task of the job itself, without getting paid. Let's say it takes 12-15 hours to complete this requested spec assignment, and you rush to send it off only to find out that another applicant got the position. In the end, you lose valuable time that could have been used to enhance your own portfolio, or further your marketing efforts.

I usually don't encourage spec work, even though in some few cases, it can actually help. If you lack clientele, and a praise worthy portfolio you can go this route, but keep in mind this is not your only option to achieve your freelancing goals. If you find yourself wondering whether a potential client's request for spec work is worth it, ask yourself these questions: Is this the only way to find work, and build your portfolio? Will this really connect you with this potential client? Is the workload reasonable for you? Does the client seem genuine, and or legitimate?

I remember a close friend of mine, also a freelancer, did some spec work for a company a few years ago. He slaved over every detail of this project, and even lost sleep because of it. He was very disappointed to hear they decided not to choose him, so be aware of the risk involved in doing spec work. Remember there are some unethical individuals who will try to take advantage of you, and use your spec work without permission.

As a freelancer, it is so important to brand yourself, not only does this bring more clients your way, but it adds value to you as a professional. If this potential client is not willing to hire you based on you portfolio work, resume, references, your out-of-this-world creativity, and excellent communication skills, then you are better off letting that potential client go.

The topic of pricing as a freelancer is often a touchy subject. If your a newbie, and itching to snatch that first client, it is so tempting to just shoot a random number you think they will like in order to seal the deal. We all know doing this has dire consequences as well. Sure you landed that client, but is the return a great one? For example, Freelancer A works 80 hours to make $300, and Freelancer B made the same amount under $50. Why is this you may ask? Freelancer B charged a higher rate, and probably did his or her research, where as Freelancer A works his or her tail off to make a few bucks.

There are a number of things to keep in mind when pricing your products and services. I suggest looking up the art of pricing to get a feel of how this concept really works. It is really more beneficial to create a pricing strategy before you divulge into steady freelance activity. In general, when it comes to pricing, you have to consider your Costs, Competition, and what the overall market rate is.

★ Costs

Before coughing up that quote to potential clients, consider the costs you are racking up to do business. Those costs can range from marketing your services to accounting, software expense, as well as equipment. This is one of the most influential factors of creating a pricing strategy so make sure you keep good record of your cost of business.

★Competition

Research is the one activity that will save you from tremendous headaches later on. Try to to network with HR professionals in your field, and find out what the average charge is. Find surveys on your profession specialty, and check out your competitor's website consistently to get a feel for what they are currently doing. When it comes to beating your competition in terms of price, it's best to stay in the middle range of prices, and pump out unbeatable quality work at all times. If you charge much higher than your competition, your products/services have to reflect the higher price. If you price lower, you may land more clients, but you may also lose some clients because they wont take you seriously. Let's face it you have some people who are budget conscious, and others who assume low price equals low quality.

★Current Market

Since freelance is more geared towards supply and demand, finding this information won't be easy. You may have to re-adjust your rates to stay somewhat parallel with what the market is doing. If you want a bigger slice of the market share price, you need to diversify your current specialties. Adding more experience and knowledge always increases a freelancer's value, therefore enabling them to increase on price.

That is my overall guide on pricing as a freelancer. Of course, there are a few other factors that need to considered when finding your price, and I will try to cover them all in time. Paint Me Pretty!How To Add Make-Up To Your Fashion Croquis

Hello my friends! As promised, I will cover how to add make-up to you lovely fashion croquis. Now I will only cover the make up aspect, and will move through this fairly quickly. As you can see in the first picture I started on a blank slate. This sketch is also another part of my Spring 2010 collection.

Step 1: After coloring the croquis and applying highlights and shadows utilizing the dodge and burn tool, you should flatten the original picture. After you flatten, click and drag down to the 'new layer' tab to create a duplicate layer. Then click new layer a couple of times, and name each section eye shadow, blush, etc.

Step 2: Use the paint brush tool to apply the eye liner. I suggest making the line thick to get the effect of the next step. After you draw on the liner select the smudge tool.

Step 3: After you select the Smudge tool click and drag in short strokes to get the effect of bold lashes as well as the 'smokey eye' look. As seen below.

Step 4: Click on the layer you named 'eye shadow', and color over the eye lid of your croquis. Try to cover most of the lid, and don't worry if you go over the brow or eye line, you can clean that up with the eraser too as seen in the next step.

Step 5: Reduce the size of your eraser brush, and slowly erase below the brow line, and any other overages Then click on the opacity and lower it so it can blend more with the croquis' skin. that you see. Don't worry your only erasing the layer eye shadow, so this will not compromise your original illustration.

Step 6: Click on the 'blush' layer,select your paint brush tool, and desired blush color. Click along the fullest part of your fashion croquis' face.

Step 7: Simply repeat the steps above as far as cleaning up, and changing the opacity. I used the dodge tool to add highlights and dimension.

Step 8: Add a layer for the lips if you want and color/clean as directed above. Don't forget to drop the opacity, and play with the burn & dodge tool, don't be afraid to experiment.

The Notorious Time Thief!Dealing With Procrastination As A Freelancer

As a freelancer, you have the luxury of working your own hours your way. You have the liberty to complete projects at home in your satin PJ's, or at your favorite Starbucks while sipping a Latte listening to Bob Marley. Beware however, this perk can easily turn into a curse when you allow the infamous time thief AKA procrastination, to become a habit. For those who can not readily recognize this thief, it is the tendency to indulge in the unnecessary to avoid things that are necessary.

Things That The Time Thief Can Cost You:

Money
Quality
Clients

Procrastination can easily creep in without you even realizing it. That task that needed to be completed by 5:00 PM gets pushed back to 6:00 PM, and by 6:00 PM you figure pushing it to 7:00PM won't hurt a bit. What exactly are you doing that causes that task to be postponed every time? Was that reason really all that important? Well today I am going to share with you my top five remedies of ridding yourself from this troublesome time thief.

1. Determination

Have an extreme commitment to your tasks, and try to remain interested. The same way you would coordinate your day around just to catch that new episode of Project Runway by 10:00PM, you need to apply that to your projects. You have to repeatedly tell yourself you have to get this done, because your clients are depending on you. A sense of urgency keeps you on your toes and therefore more productive.

2. Organize Your Tasks Visually

Visual representation of your tasks via charts, boards, and even post it notes keeps the tasks at hand in mind. I suggest investing in dry erase board, and making lists of all the tasks/projects you have placing the highest priority first and move forward from there. You can still become AWOL with the time thief, but at least you will have a big visual reminder in your face to bring you back down to earth.

3. Write A List Of All The Things You Stand To Lose Because Of This Habit

Sometimes forcing yourself to see what your losses are and/or could be is a motivator within itself. You don't want to end up in the red, so keep pushing forward. As freelancers we tend to get a bit 'lax about our work, and slowly forget about the bigger picture. By writing out potential losses or losses in the past because of this habit, it forces you to acknowledge the fact that you need to tighten up on your time management.

4.Make Yourself Accountable To Someone

Tell a friend, former co-worker, or family member about your time management issue, and ask for help. You can't do everything by yourself all the time, and your loved ones should be happy to help you. Having someone to occassionally check in on your progress can drastically improve your productivity.

5. Reward Yourself

Motivate yourself by rewarding yourself when you reach your personal work milestones. This reward can be whatever your little heart desires, but must be good enough to keep you moving. This is called the carrot strategy. It is similar to placing a carrot on a string in front of a Donkey or Horse, they continue to move because of what they want to get. Apply that same mentality when it comes to getting through a heavy work load.

There you have it! By implementing these five strategies you have already defeated that nasty little time thief most people struggle with everyday. Hello my friends! I am excited to announce that on December 31st, 2009, I won a design contest on http://hokeycroquis.blogspot.com. The contest consisted of creating a sketch of a cocktail dress to wear to a holiday party. The sketch I submitted was from a past sketch of the day post, and is currently being produced by me.

(Contest Winning Sketch)

The prize for the winner was an original Hokey Croquis sketch book. The Hokey Croquis is basically a fashion flat sketchbook with the fashion figure pre-printed on every page. This comes in handy, because when I get ready to do sketches I usually have to fish for my fashion croquis, and if I forget to bring my croquis all together I simply forgo my design plans for that day.

When I got it in the mail I felt like a little kid on Christmas day. The packaging is simply adorable! Its features include a very sturdy spiral-bound exterior, complete with a cute pink and brown ribbon closure. The paper is made from heavy stock, which makes it easy to use with markers, pens, and of course pencils. The best part is the fashion croquis disappears after the sketch is scanned or photocopied, so all that is seen is the fashion flat.

Tamar Daniels, also former freelancer, is the creator of Hokey Croquis. If you visit her site you will see the amazing work she has done throughout her career. Anywho, I am currently wrapping up my Fall 2010 collection, and decided to do some rough flats on the sketch pad. Typically, I prefer to do my technical flats via Adobe Illustrator, but sometimes when I need flats fast, I create them by hand. I decided to create a flat for one of my recent Sketch Of The Day posts. The shape of the croquis, guidelines, and side note section helped a ton with keeping all the technical details in perspective.

Keep in mind this is a quick sketch, but I think it came out pretty well. I definitely recommend this to my peers as well as beginners, who want to go deeper into designing. The price is a steal, and the value easily surpasses any other sketchbook I have come across. There you have it my quick review of a new product that should be in every designer's studio, because it is a permanent feature in my studio from now on. Part-Time Affair...Or All The Way? Full-Time vs Part-Time Freelancing

Here we go, another long day at the office. It's 9:15AM, and your at your desk trying to enjoy your Vanilla Latte as your talkative cubicle neighbor babbles on about her speed dating experience the night before. Just as you begin to check your emails, your boss tosses a five inch stack of documents to file on your desk without even saying hello. You suddenly think about the freelancing idea you have been considering, and begin really considering walking off that very moment. Before you make your grandeur exit out of the office door consider what you are getting into. I will break down the ins and outs of freelancing full time vs part-time, and if its worth getting into at all.

Freelancing on the side while working a regular job can be both fulfilling, and a great way to earn some extra income. Sure you will still have to deal with the scenario above, but you will be able to be your own boss even if its only part-time. I started freelancing when I realized how hard it is to find work as a fashion designer. I also enjoyed helping smaller start-up companies create their apparel lines. They can't pay what corporate pays, but they are great to work with as far as gaining experience goes. Here's my take on part-time vs full-time freelancing:

"Testing the waters."
Freelancing part-time enables you to test the waters without sinking off in the deep end. If your freelancing endeavors don't pan out the way you want, you don't need to fret because you still have that 9-5 cushion to support you. If your freelancing full-time, you are at risk for financial troubles as well as increased stress from the overall situation. You have to constantly stay on top of your prospecting in order to avoid this, and even then...well stuff happens.

"Can You Say Vacay!"
Another pro of freelancing part-time is being able to pick and choose what kind of gigs you would like to work on, and when to work on them. Unlike most talented starving artists, a part-timer has the luxury of knowing when the next pay check is coming. They can have vacations whereas full-timers have to work year round just to survive.

"If You Build It..."
Part-time freelancing also enables you to build your portfolio on your own time-line, and the working under not-so-rushed conditions can improve the quality of your work.

The Not So Great Aspects:

"No Time For Fun, Hun!"
With a full-time gig, and freelance work you will barely have time for a social life. Freelancing will take up most of your weekends and evenings. All free time must be invested in building more clientele, and keeping up with existing clients.

"Be On The Look Out!"
If your side line freelancing creates a conflict of interest, a little extra money on the side can turn into a BIG gamble. If caught, you can be reprimanded, and probably fired. Some companies have specific guidelines about conflicts of interests, so be sure to learn and understand what they are. As a full-timer, you don't have to worry about this aspect as much though you will still have guidelines to follow. If your working with two competing companies at once this can definitely get you blacked out the market, so beware!

Biting Off More Than You Can Chew!"
If and when your freelance business picks up, it can possibly interfere with your regular 9-5. Tight deadlines may lead to you using sick days, which you will most likely want to save for something else. If your full-time, you have the option of outsourcing some of your work, but otherwise you will still have to work long hours.

"Office Hours Only!"
Some clients may want to interact only during regular office hours, which may interfere with your full time job. If you fail to communicate with them promptly, your clients may feel they are not being taken seriously, and your employer may become suspicious if your constantly talking on the phone. Full-time players of course don't have this problem because their availability is pretty open, but some clients will take advantage of this fact as well so set guidelines early on.

"Worst Of Both Worlds"
Not only will you have to deal with that overzealous manager at you main job, as a part-time freelancer you have to deal with equally demanding clients. As you take off one hat at 5pm, your putting on several others for your freelancing business. You are the accountant, bookkeeper, Sales rep, IT, Marketing rep, Designer and much more. Full-timers still have to wear all these hats, but they don't have to deal with the stress of a day job as a part-timer would.There you have it, my take on full-time freelancing vs part-time freelancing. I would definitely suggest starting off as a part-timer before you dive in, and see if this is the type of lifestyle you want to live. Freelancing is not just a job its a way of life, and it can be more stressful than you bargained for if you don't do your research. Hope that helps! Help Me Launch My Line! Part One: The realistic approach when producing a clothing line

Your moment has finally arrived! Your slightly blinded by the flashing lights as you stop at the end of the runway, and take a bow. The people of the press are literally falling over to get a statement about your latest collection. High profile celebrities, and their stylists are front row applauding your breath taking pieces and...(pop!)....Sorry to be the one to bust your bubble, but there are certain aspects to be considered before you get anywhere near this status.

A lot of people feel they have what it takes to create an apparel line, but at the end of the day many of them lack the general knowledge of the business end of the venture. Sure, you may have adorable dresses or denim, but there are certain steps that need to be implemented in order to be a success. In this diary entry I will give you a comprehensive guide as to what it takes to create an apparel line from the product development end.

Product-What type of product do you plan to introduce to the market? Do you specialize in making graphic tees, dance wear, intimates, or a various range of apparel types? Will your products be eco-friendly, discount, or luxury? You need to think long and hard on what you plan on introducing to the market, and how do you plan to present it as well.

Styling- How are your products going to be merchandised? Do you know will the actual flow of your line be? Will you specialize in related separates or suits? How will your products be presented before the targeted consumer? Do you have a clear brand image you want to create in your customers mind? The answer to that question should have automatically been a yes, because branding is essential to your line's development.

Sizes-What are your limits as far as sizes go? Will you be offering basic sizes or specializes size groups such as Petities, Petitie-Plus, and or general plus sizes only? This is an important factor because it can have an effect on your overall costs. The bigger the sizes mean more fabrication, and the wider the size range the more likely it will cost to produce your product line.

Samples-Who will be making your samples/prototypes, and what is your sample size? Do you have an ideal fit model/dress form to fit the samples to. Getting the sample just right may take a couple of tries, and this can add as far as cost so be sure to be careful at this stage. It is very easy for your time and money to get tied up into counter samples, especially if trust someone else is handling that aspect. Thoroughly researching manufacturers, pattern makers, and or seamstresses will be help prevent major losses in the long run.

Fabrication-What types of fabric will your line consist of? Will your line offer all natural, synthetic, blends or all of the above? It is imperative that you understand this importance of this aspect simply because fabrics can be costly, thus making the product pricing more complex. I advise you to heavily research this area before you jump the gun, and invest in any fabric.

Price Points-Production costs, fabrications, shipping, and sourcing are all aspects that add into the cost of your product line. Your price point should cover these costs, and all a little room for profit. Though the idea is to make a profit, your price points should be in a reasonable range of what your target consumer is willing to pay for your products. After you research your target consumer, I suggest you create a base line price scale as a guide during your product development process.

Location, Location, Location- How will you present your product? Who will be carrying your products? Will you have your own boutique, or do you plan on selling exclusively online, or local boutiques and specialty shops? Remember this is extremely important as you develop your products, because you overhead costs should be accounted for when buffering out your pricing,

As you can see, there is a lot to consider when it comes to starting an apparel line. If you can fluidly answer the questions above then you are well on your way, if not I suggest you do your research. The purpose of this entry is not to defer people from launching their own lines, but to inform them about the long process that comes with it. Its okay to dream, but at some point in time you have to be realistic about your ideas as well. My next diary entry will go more into depth about the product development process so stay tuned!

Hello everyone! Today's sketch of the day is part of my past summer internship project at Macy's Merchandising Group in New York. It was a group effort, and our group's mock product line was called INC euro, which is a fresher version of Macy's sleek private brand INC. Its a knit dress with a built in waistline, draped along the sides with a super huge cowl/hoodie. This was actually one of the faves of our collection. Color Me Bad! How To Color Your Fabulous Fashion Croquis In Photoshop

This week's tutorial will focus primarily on coloring your fashion Croquis in Adobe Photoshop. I will be using a previous Sketch of the Day post I will call Sweet Pea. I currently set up the file in a basic RGB for now, but if I were to print this I would set up my document in CMYK mode with the resolution set to 300 pixels.

After you scan in or open your fashion sketch in Photoshop, you need to create two duplicate copies. These additional copies will be named Drawing and Color. These additional copies come in handy when you have made too many errors, and can't go back within your history. The additional layers prevent you from compromising the original pictures.

Next, select the brush tool and click 'airbrush' in the brushes option tab in the upper right part of the screen. Then set the brush set control to fade shown in the picture below. Fade simulates natural paint brush strokes.

The next few steps are pretty simple! We will focus on Sweet Pea's face first.

Use the paint brush tool to color in the skin in any desired tone.

After you color the skin, you can add dimensions to your sketch simply using the Burn and dodge tool. The burn tool simply darkens the area you click and drag on. I LOVE this tool! You can also change the opacity and intensity of the burn tool. I suggest you play around with it to get the effect that you would prefer.

The burn tool looks like a hand symbol. (see picture below)

Next, I will add highlights to Sweet Pea by using the Dodge tool pictured below. The Dodge tool does the exact opposite effect of the Burn tool.

As you can see I colored in the skin and added make-up (I will cover doing make-up on fashion croquis in another diary entry). The highlights and shadows can be clearly seen here.

Lastly, the final product:

That's it! All you need is the paint brush tool, dodge tool, and the burn tool. Another helpful tool not mentioned above is the Smudge tool. If you scroll up it is directly next to the burn tool and also looks like a hand symbol. This tool helps blends your colors for a smoother effect. Hope that helped! Hola friends! Today's sketch of the day is a sample from my Spring 2010 collection. My inspiration/theme for this collection was the Botanical Beauty meets the Boho Bum, which is basically a rich bohemian look with a slight rugged edge. This look is a pair of very chic screen-printed linen pants, paired with a slight bubble hem silk cross front tank. This look is ideal for night time beach/pool parties, or that hot date you have been looking forward to all week. ;) With that being said, all comments are both appreciated and encouraged!

Fashion Sense Mixed With A Little Common Sense! The five essential topics to cover in a design brief

I remember how I excitedly entered the quaint, lake-front Starbucks near my home that Friday morning, and how I couldn't help but to think what a great opportunity this would be. I began to set up my laptop, while waiting for my potential client to join me for our meeting. One tall non-fat Caramel Macchiato later the meeting went underway. The potential client excitedly spoke about his brand, and explained how impressed he was about my portfolio presentation.

He then stated he wanted to begin immediately, and I was to design for Fall 2010 launch. It was then I realized even though he was obviously long-winded, I still didn't know much about his brand. It was a good thing I brought a copy of my handy dandy Design Brief and Non-Disclosure Agreement. Needless to say, that design brief brought the prospect's ideas into perspective.

For those who don't know, a design brief is a comprehensive written document for a design project developed in concert by a person representing the business need for design and the designer. The document is focused on the desired results of design – not aesthetics. In this diary entry, I will cover the 5 essential topics to cover in your design brief, to avoid confusion down the line.

Topic #1 - Brief description of product(s) and/or Brand

This is the most important part of the design brief. This gives the client the opportunity to explain his or her ideas in detail, as well as a chance for you to collect all necessary information. Does this client have a website, logo, and already branded materials? What is the client's branding strategy? What is the client's budget? Pay close attention to the adjectives they use when explaining their products.

Topic #2 - Customer Profile

It is imperative that your client knows and understands his or her target customer. Be sure the client is clear on the customer's demographics as well as psychographics. What is the customers age, sex, general location? What types of stores does this individual usually frequent?

Topic #3 - Anticipated Price Points

The consumer profile and anticipated price points go hand in hand. If their design aesthetic is very complicated and modern, be sure to explain what type(s) of consumers would pay for that project. If they want high quality fabrics, be sure to reiterate what their budget can realistically cover. Is the client aware of pattern making costs? Does the client plan to develop the product domestically or internationally?

Topic #4 - Where will the products will be sold?

Does your client have an idea of the types of stores they would like to sell to? If so, is he or she aware of the company's quality standards? Be sure to cover all channels of retailing in detail with him or her to get a better understanding of what it will take to meet the client's goal(s).

Topic #5 - Who do you hang with?

In other words, who is the client's competition. What company or brand, does the client want to be associated with or compared to? What is the unique selling point of the client's brand, that will differentiate them from these specific labels? What is your client's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats? At the end of the meeting, I left still feeling lively from my coffee, and the slightly flustered client shortly followed suit. My design brief shown him that he had a lot to cover before he could move on with his plans. There were topics introduced that he knew nothing about. As a freelance apparel designer, I expect my clients to help me help them, so I firmly stand behind vigorous preparation before exploring any 'good' idea. This was inspired by the movie The Corpse Bride by Tim Burton. This group was a representation of the bridesmaids in the wedding that never was. They Love Me...They Love Me Not...Good Clients Vs. Bad Clients & how to deal

As a freelancer, it is important to have a mutual beneficial relationship with your client. Most issues that arise from client/freelancer relationships are derived from a lack of communication as well as lack of understanding. In this diary entry, I will explain the five most critical and common client types. It doesn't matter what your freelancing endeavor consists of, at some point in you freelancing career you will run into at least one of these client types.

Client Type # 1 - Paranoia

This client tends to be very legal savvy. He or she probably will not want to discuss particulars with you until you sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), and more than likely it will lie heavily in their favor. The upside of this is to remember you are being protected as well. I once had a prospect who would not even disclose the brand's name to me without me signing a NDA, but wanted me to send her digital copies of my portfolio before we sat down for the signing. Needless to say, I politely turned down any future business with her company, but after that situation I realized the importance of an NDA. Sometimes dealing with this type of client adds more risk than gain, so try to consider if it is worth it before accepting the project. Weigh out all the pros and cons, and read that NDA very closely. Most importantly do not be afraid to ask questions!

Client # 2 - The Bargain Hunter

This client type believes all prices should be negotiable. This means agreeing on price and job descriptions can get a bit frustrating, complicated, and drawn out. The best way to handle them is to take the same bargain-like approach. Negotiate with the client to find a fair price. This usually involves bidding at a higher price model and working your way down to a reasonable price. Remember to be assertive on what is expected as far as payment and workload.

Client # 3- The Indecisive-Decision Maker

This client type has the inability to articulate what he or she wants, which makes this client more higher risk than most. The risk is higher because if you don't produce what they think they want at the time; this client freelancer relationship can become quite costly in both terms of time and money. Not to mention, this can create a strain between both parties which can end in a negative way. The best way to deal with this client is to be very clear with how much revisions cost, and let them know your revision policy. A good design brief is also another way to help guide the client into the right direction as far as his or her needs go. I will cover design briefs in another diary entry so stay tuned!

Client # 4 - The Budget Client

This client is similar to the bargain hunter, but usually has a much tighter budget to start with. Its best to take time to think about the quality of work they expect and how much this project will cost in terms of time, and look at the budget realistically. Make sure you reiterate the amount of work that comes with their limited budget. Let the limitations be known early on, and if they become negative or pushy, its best to just leave this client alone all together.

Client # 5 - 'The Right-Now!' Client

This client usually requests your services and expect completion on a very tight schedule. This client assumes their project has the highest priority, and therefor expect things at the snap of a finger. This client can develop into an inconvenience being that they may require extra attention than most. If this client gives you a very short time frame for an intensive project, be sure to adjust your price accordingly, and explain this price modification before accepting. Try to limit the amount of these types of clients if possible, because they can become quite stressful.

There you have it the five client types to keep any eye out for. Keep in mind some clients may share some of those traits, and this is only to be used as a guide; because of course, not everyone is made equal. I hope this helps you along your freelancing journey! Text Messaages, Twitter, Facebook...Oh My! Distractions: How To Deal With Them When Slammed With Client Work

Life's good. You have multiple clients, new prospects, and projects piled on your desk ready for your magic touch. You power on your computer, and suddenly receive five instant messages from your needy room mate. Your new Beyonce ring tone starts to fill your once zen-like quiet office, and your email alert chimes along. Five hours later, your must-do list is nowhere near completion. OMG! Where did the time go!?

Distractions can be a huge problem when your work for yourself; even with deadlines and commitments there is no one there breathing down your neck to check on your progress ever so often. It is so easy to lose track of time when you have no restrictions on your daily work routine. Lack of better time management skills, is a common casualty of most freelancers. In this diary entry, I will provide you with the top five ways to deal with distractions on a day to day basis.

Tip # 1 - Internet Restriction

If possible, cut yourself off from the internet for a specified period of time. Ask yourself, Do I really need to be online ALL the time? If there is no critical need to be online, go completely offline until your specified tasks are finished. This means no instant messenger, yahoo, browsers etc. I personally use this tactic to keep myself from distracting activity online.

Tip # 2 - Put Down That Phone!!!

Let your friends and family know when they can call you. During intensive projects set your phone to silent, and put it away from your sight. I always use this tactic, because it is so tempting to return text messages, and talk to that old friend you have not spoke to in a while, but a few minutes can turn into hours, and this can be detrimental to your task completion for that specified deadline.

Tip # 3 - Do Not Disturb!

Communicate to your friends, families and co-workers that you should not be disturbed when working at certain times of the day. You have to set basic rules, and reinforce them so they can get the picture. Whether it is your significant other, children, or even your design manager; they need to respect the fact that you value your time.

Tip # 4 - Rate Your Space!

Sometimes your work enviornment can be a distraction in itself. Try to keep your work area clean and clear of clutter. I can be a pack rat at times, so I work on keeping this up everyday. If you work at home try to find a space that has the least amount of noise. Some people work better in a quiet enviornment, and some like to listen to few good tunes as they work, its totally up to you.

Tip # 5 - Control Your Time

It is almost too easy to break from a project for a few minutes, and wind up realizing hours later how little you have accomplished for that day. Try keeping a log or time sheet to track where most of your time is being spent.
